![]() ![]() 02/11/00--Pro football team using Scheig assessment to help make draft choices Scheig Associates of Gig Harbor, Wash., is well-known to the trucking industry for their Hiring and Performance Systems for truck drivers and diesel technicians. Now, however, word about what Scheig can do is spreading to the pro sports area. Last September [1999], the Seattle Seahawks football team began working with Scheig Associates to develop a pre-draft assessment system that would help the team sort the best potential football players from the rest. According to Jackie Squires, vice president of business development for Scheig, Seahawk management was looking for a tool that would help them screen for the so-called "immeasurable" factors. "Physical skills alone don't tell the whole story about whether or not someone will be a good football player," says Squires. "It's a fairly easy matter to measure how fast someone can run, how well they can catch, how far they can throw, but physical skills alone don't make a great player," Squires explains. "There are lots of other 'immeasurable' behaviors that have a major impact on actual performance. The Seahawks wanted to find a better way to assess those critical but less tangible factors before they spent time and money on a player." According to Squires, the Seahawks will be using the Scheig System for the first time during this spring's draft season. "In the past, the team used psychological tests and IQ tests to help assess candidates," says Squires. "This is the first time they've had a tool that was developed strictly for football. This year, they'll be able to evaluate the behaviors of new candidates against those of other top football players." Are other teams considering the Scheig system? "Oh, yes," says Squires, "but it's too soon
to share the details." -END- |
